Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Evvy Kartini

Evvy Kartini is an expert on the neutron scattering and respected internationally. Her international reputation in the field of neutron scattering and solid state ionics, has been well established. She began her research on Superionic glasses early 1990, at Hahn Meitner Institute, Berlin, Germany and supervised by well known scientists Prof. Dr. Ferenc Mezei. In 1994-1995, during her PhD work, she joint McMaster University, under supervision of Prof. Dr. Malcolm F. Collins. The existence of Boson peaks in ZnCl2 and CKN, glasses were an interesting phenomena, therefore she conducted experiment inelastic neutron scattering at Nuclear Research Reactor, Chalk River Laboratory, Canada. In 1995-1996, she returned to Germany, and finished her PhD at the Technical University (TU), Berlin, Germany. During this period, she was also awarded to attend precious course “Higher European Research Course for Users Using Large System (HERCULES)” in Institute of Laue Langevin, Grenoble, France and other nuclear facilities in France. In 1996, She presented her PhD work at the 1st European Conference on Neutron Scattering in Interlaken, Switzerland, in front of 600 participants. In 1998-2000, She continued her Postdoctoral work at McMaster University Canada. Her specialization is on developing new material Superionic glasses as solid electrolyte in a rechargeable battery. These materials have been observed by different neutron instruments at the international facilities, in KEK and J-PARC, Japan; HMI, Berlin; CRL, Canada; ANSTO, Australia; and ISIS, UK. She collaborated with many international scientists from different countries. In 2001, she was invited as visiting scientists at the KEK, Japan, received the fellowship from Mombukagasho. Since then, her collaborations with Japan’s institutions were established, and then implemented by exchanged students and joint research. She has been supervising or co-promoting thesis of her students in Indonesian, Japan and Australian Universities. She published many international reputable journals during those services. In 2002 and 2003, she received the ‘RUT Award’ from the President of RI, Megawati Soekarno Putri, as best national principle investigator, and ‘Science Technology Award’, from Indonesian Toray Science Foundation, Japan. Recently, she was awarded as 10 Indonesian Innovator in Technologies, by TEMPO (2012).

She has been performing international collaborations with prominent International scientists from Bragg Institute, Australia Nuclear Science and Technology Organization (ANSTO), Australia; Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-Parc), Japan; High Energy Accelerator Research Complex (KEK), Japan; Ibaraki University, Japan; Tohoku University, Japan etc; McMaster University, Canada; and former Hahn Meitner Institute, Berlin, Germany. She has been represented as a leader (President) of the Indonesian Neutron Scattering Society (INSS) since 2013. The INSS aims to promote the nuclear science and technology in Indonesia and in this region, to increase the number of users of neutron scattering and to encourage young scientists to apply the neutron scattering on their researches. She is one of the executive committee of the Asian Oceania Neutron Scattering Society (AONSA). (http://www.inss.batan.go.id)

Besides neutron scattering, Evvy Kartini has expertise on the materials science, especially on lithium ion battery research. She received International Research Grant from the Ministry Research and Technology from 2005 until 2010; and also received the National System Innovation Research Grant from 2011-2015; where she coordinated different research topics with several institutions abroad, besides managing her research team in BATAN, Indonesia. Recently, her research entitled “Development of thin film rechargeable battery”. For this, her team collaborated with the group of IMRAM, Tohoku University, and Sendai, Japan. She with her team has been initiating and developing an ‘Integrated Battery Laboratory’ in Science and Technology Center for Advanced Materials, National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN). The battery equipments were granted by the Ministry of Research and Technology, in 2013, and officially launched by the Minister of Research and Technology, Prof. Dr. I Gusti Muhammad Nuh. This laboratory has been well equipped with the battery line production, and would became one of the center of excellences for national battery research activities. The international and national collaborations have been performed with Bandung Institute of Technology, University of Indonesia, Institute of Technology 10 November Surabaya, Ministry of Industry, Agency for Assessment, Application and Technology, Indonesian Institute of Science, as well as with the Industrial partner, ASTRA Co. and NIPRESS. In the regional, the collaborations on solid state ionics have been started with the prominent scientists from National University of Singapore, Indian Institute of Technology, University Kebangsaan Malaysia, etc. Evvy Kartini, has became one of the International Board Member of the Asian Society of Solid State Ionics and International Society of Solid State Ionics. Recently, Evvy Kartini has attended the 20th International Conference on Solid State Ionics (ICSSI) in Keystone, Colorado, USA, 2015. She was there not only for presenting her research work on battery researches, but also represented Asia-Australia region as councilor of the International Society of Solid State Ionics. During the visit, she also performed the International joint research with Prof. Ryan O’hayre and Prof. Yongan Yang, from Colorado School of Mines. She was selected and voted during the board election in the 19th International Conference on Solid State Ionics (ICSSI) in Kyoto, Japan, 2013. She was one of the International Advisory Board, and also chaired the session of Research on Battery Materials. She presented, also her recent topic on development of new lithium solid electrolyte, which is explored by the inelastic spectrometer instrument at Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), the most leading spallation neutron source in the world. She has performed joint collaboration with Prof. Dr. Masatoshi Arai and his group from J-PARC, as well as Prof. Dr. Takashi Kamiyama from KEK, Japan and Prof. Dr. Takashi Sakuma from Ibaraki University, Mito, Japan.

Evvy Kartini has also been very active on improving the skill of young researchers in Indonesia, where she became invited lecture at the Education and Training Program of the Indonesian Institute of Science. She motivates young scientists from various places and institutions in Indonesia; and also teaches them how to prepare a good proposal, and write international publications. It is very important to encourage young researchers before developing their career. She has also been supervising many students from different universities in Indonesia, such as, ITB, UI, ITS, STTN, etc. The students with various background, and educations, ranging from bachelor, master to PhD candidates, worked at distinct topics from the advanced materials, lithium ion battery materials, modeling and neutron scattering applications etc. Sometime she gave a general lecture at the Universities, Telkom University, Mercu Buana University, Indonesian University, Gadjah Mada University, Padjadjaran University, etc., and also at the University Kebangsaan Malaysia and Wollongong University, Sydney; McMaster University, Canada; as visiting professor.

Evvy Kartini has a lot of experiences in organizing various international events, and chaired several international conferences and workshops, such as, International Conference on Materials Science and Technology (ICMST2010), International Symposium on Nanotechnology (ISN2013), ICMST 2014; International School on Solid State Ionics; Battery School and workshop (2014); Workshop on Active Learning in Optics (ALOP2015), etc. She is also a President of Materials Research Society Indonesia (MRS-Ina). Recently, she was selected to chair the Indonesian Researchers Union (HIMPENINDO), branch National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN). The main aims of those societies are to improve the skill of national researchers on performing good researches, to promote the expertise of the scientists in Indonesia, and to bring up Indonesian researches and researchers into the international forum.

For Editorial and reviewer experiences, since 2012, Evvy Kartini has been appointed as one of referee members of the National Accreditation Journal of the Indonesian Institute of Science. She has been evaluating and reviewing various national journals and contributing on their quality improvements. She has been an editor of several national journals, such as Makara Science (University of Indonesia), Indonesian Journal of Mathematic and Science (ITB), Indonesian Journal of Materials Science (BATAN), etc. She has been also guest reviewer in many international journals, published by Elsevier or Springer, such as Solid State Ionics, Physica B, Journal Alloys compound, Ionics, Journal of Material Chemistry, etc. Her involvement with the Atom Indonesia since 2007 was as an Editorial board, and then in 2008 she became Chief Editor until present. Atom Indonesia is an English journal related to nuclear science and technology, which is published by National Nuclear Energy Agency, Indonesia (http://www.aij.batan.go.id) . Together with her team, she has put a lot of efforts on improving this journal to be recognized as reputable international journal. She made a road map to this journal with the motto “Road to International Journal”. With her leadership and efforts, now this journal has been nationally accredited by both Indonesian Institute of Science and also Ministry Research and Education, Indonesia. It is also recognized as one of reputed international journal, and indexed by Google Scholar, DOAJ and DOI. Atom Indonesia Best Paper Award has been one of the events released by Atom Indonesia, BATAN, to encourage more scientists writing qualified journal related to the nuclear science and technology. This precious AIBPA competition has been held for the 7th times since 2008 with participants from various institutions and universities. Though many has been achieved during her services, Evvy Kartini with her team still has to put a lot of efforts on promoting this journal until it is indexed by Scopus and ISI Thomson.
