Regional Accelerator School 2017
October 9 ~ 13, 2017
Yogyakarta, Indonesia

PURPOSE AND NATURE

Since its first time discovered more than 80 years ago, the development and used of particle accelerator has been growing significantly. The use of accelerators in fundamental research has been known for something, e.g. for deciphering the material structures, examining the fundamental forces of nature or recreating the birth of universe. But, the accelerator is not only used for basic science research, the most modern accelerator are however used in hospitals for radioisotope production for medical use and radiation source for radiotherapy, and in industry for irradiation and treatment of materials. In fact, they have shown an essential contribution to the people well-being.

The South-East Asia region is known as among the fastest growing region in the world, in terms of economic, science and technology as well. One could be foreseen the role of particle accelerator to contribute for a sustainable development of the countries in the region. Providing students, young scientist and engineers from the region the opportunity to get basic knowledge on accelerator science and technology would be benefical for the region in terms of developing the human resources.

The last school was held in 2015 with outside contribution from Stanford University. It was recently decided that BATAN will organize accelerator schools bi-annually every odd-numbered years. Past schools hace also been attended by participants from outside Indonesia especially from Southeast Asian contries, thus the name 'Regional Accelerator School'. In the past, participants of school recruited from research institutions, universities, hospitals and others to learn the subject related with accelerator technology and its applications i.e. materials irradition using Electron Beam Machine, isotopes production for cancer diagnosis using Baby Cyclotron, Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) from which neutrons are developed using accelerator cyclotron-based neutron source, etc.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this school is to introduce the science, technology, and applications of accelerators to academics, scientists and engineers.

TOPICS INCLUDE

Lecture will cover basic accelerator physics, technology and applications. As a provisional program there will be lectures on: RF Generator and its Cavities; Beam dynamic transport; Interaction of proton charged particle with matter; Introduction to proton and hadron therapy system; Cyclotron for proton therapy system; and visit to accelerator facility.

SPEAKERS

  • Prof. Dr. Robert Laxdal (Interim Associate Lab Director of Accelerators, Triumf Laboratory, Vancouver, Canada)
  • Prof. Pramudita Anggraita (Particle Physics Expert)
  • Prof. Darsono (BATAN)
  • to be determined

PARTICIPANTS

Academics, young scientist and engineers from all South East Asian countries who work with many type of accelerators are welcome to apply for this intense 5-days school. The school will be conducted in English and hence participants should have an adequate working knowledge of this language.

FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS

  • There is no registration fee.
  • Travel and subsistence expenses of the participants should be borne by the participants.
