Neutron radiography is a non-destructive imaging technique that uses thermal neutrons to probe the sample. Unlike X-ray, neutron only interacts with atomic nuclei. The characteristics of neutron–matter interactions enable the visualization of hydrogen rich substances, even when these are surrounded by metallic layers that would render them invisible under X-ray imaging. Thus, neutron imaging techniques have found applications in technological fields, such as the automotive, nuclear and aerospace industries, as well as in medicine, archaeology, biology and geology. The problems where X-ray radiography can not be applied but can be solved easily by neutron radiography are, for instance:

  • Determination of light elements in the heavier materials (inspection of light materials through the metal shields).
  • The neighboring elements in the periodic table (carbon and boron, cadmium, indium and tin) or even isotopes of the same element can be distinguished.
  • Tracing of elements as H, B, Li, In, Cd, Sm, Gd, Eu, Dy which have very high neutron absorption.
  • Inspection of high radioactive materials.
  • Examination of thick metal slabs.

OBJECTIVES
The purpose of the workshop is to provide a neutron beam time for participants to perform experiment using our neutron radiography facility with their own sample, and reconstruct the data with 2D and 3D tomographic recontruction software.

EXPECTED OUTPUTS
The expected output from the program is likely to:

  • upgrade the technical knowledge of the participants in applying Neutron Radiography/Tomography technique to some specific industrial NDT problems;
  • provide knowledge of basics of neutron radiography technique and its applications, Instrumentation and Control System of Neutron Radiography Facility, as well as 2D and 3D Tomographic Recontsruction;
  • develop knowledge of defects types and probability of detection using image analysis and measurement tools.

i-Concern

International Conference on Nuclear Capacity building, Education, Research and Applications (I-Concern’19) i-Concern is hosted by National Nuclear Energy Agency of Indonesia (BATAN) and is jointly organized with Indonesian Society of Nuclear Medicine (PKNI) and Polytechnic Institute of Nuclear Technology (STTN). The conference will be held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia from 6 -7 September 2019 under the theme “Encouraging Application of Nuclear Science, Technology, Innovation and Human Resources Development Towards Prosperous Indonesia”. The venue will be the Royal Ambarrukmo Hotel in the down town of Yogyakarta.

This event is held jointly between Polytechnic Institute of Nuclear Technology, Indonesian Society of Nuclear Medicine (PKNI), and National Nuclear Energy Agency of Indonesia (BATAN) which consists of PSTA, PSTBM, PSMN, PDK, and PAIR.
