The operation of the research reactor like the ones possessed by BATAN uses uranium as fuel. The uranium possess multiple times of the energy of crude oil with a volume of waste which far smaller compared to crude oil fuel of coal.
In the use of nuclear fule as explained, there is a remaining amount of uranium which could be re-utilized as a fuel for other types of reactors after going through fabrication.
BATAN conducts nuclear cycling of nuclear materials among others to reduce CO2 gas even though actually the volume of CO2 gas from the reactor is smaller compared to what is released from the use of coal, natural gas and crude oil.

Batan also cares about the problem of natural resources and environment occuring in the country. A number of researches and activities in nuclear science and technology in BATAN then are focussed in seeking solutions towards the issues of natural resources and the environment.
"The Issue of Water"
The ground water supply as a source of clean water in Indonesia which exists in the ground layers or in rocky layers under the surface of the ground is very limited. In fact the ground water also functions as a support for the burden of the surface of the earth.
Nuclear technology, specifically in the use of radioisotope for hydrology, is present as a nsolution in exploration of ground water in regions experiencinmg draught. With the technology, it could be identified in which areas have the potency to possess more water compared to other areas in the same region.
