Reaktor Triga

Activities in development and application of nuclear technology in Indonesia were initiated with the formation of a State Committee to Investigate Radioactivity in the year 1954. The State Committee had the duty to conduct investigation towards the possibility of a radioactive fall-out from nuclear weapons testing in the Pacific Ocean.
By giving attention to the development in empowerment and utilization of the atomic energy for the welfare of the people, therefore through Government Regulation No. 65 year 1958, on the date 5 December 1958 the formation of the Atomic Energy Council and the Atomic Energy Institution (LTA) was established, which then was improved to become the National Atomic Energy Agency (BATAN) based on Law No. 31 year 1964 regarding the Main Provisions of Atomic Energy. Furthermore every 5 December which is a historic dated for the development of nuclear technology in Indonesia and has been stipulated as the date of birth of BATAN.
In the following developments, in order to increase mastery in the field of nuclear science and technology, in the year 1965 the operation of the first atomic reactor (Triga Mark II) in Bandung was inaugurated. Then gradually, several facilities for R&D&E were developed in various research centers, among others the Pasar Jumat, Jakarta Center for Atomic Energy Research (1966), the GAMA Center for Atomic Energy Research in Yogyakarta (1967), and the 30 MW Multi Purpose Reactor (1987) including its supporting laboratories, like: Fabrication and fuel research, reactor safety testing, radioactive waste management and other nuclear facilities.
Meanwhile with the change in paradigm, in the year 1997 Law No. 10 regarding Nuclear Energy was stipulated which regulated the separation of the implementing element in activities in utilization of nuclear energy (BATAN) from the supervisory element of nuclear energy (BAPETEN).

Inauguration of the Operation of the 300 keV Electron Beam Machine in the Center for Research of Atomic Energy in Pasar Jumat by the RI President

1987

Inauguration of the operation of the GA. Siwabessy Multi Purpose Reactor with a power of 30 MW and Nuclear Fuel Element Installation in the Center for Research of Atomic Energy Serpong - Tangerang by the RI President.

Inauguration of operation of the Radioactive Waste Processing Installation in the Center for Research of Atomic Energy in Serpong by the RI President

1989

Inauguration of the operation of the Radioisotope and Radiopharmaceutical Installation, and the Experimental Fuel Element Installation in the Center for Research of Atomic Energy in Serpong by the RI President

1990

Inauguration of the Radio-metallurgy Installation, Installation for Nuclear Safety and Techniques, the Laboratory for Nuclear Mechanical Electronics in the Center for Research of Atomic Energy in Serpong - Tangerang by the RI President

Inauguration in operation of the Neutron Spectrometry Installation, Installation for Storage of Spent Fuel and Movement of contaminated Material in the Center For Research of Atomic Energy Serpong - Tangerang by the RI President

In commemoration of the Anniversary of the 50th Independence Day, BATAN has achieved in conducting “Whole Indonesian Core” for the GA. Siwabessy Multi Purpose Reactor

Formation of the PT Batan Teknologi (persero), Division : Production of Reactor Fuel Elements, Production of Radioisotope, Production of Instrumentation and Nuclear Engineering

Stipulation of Law No.10 Year 1997 regarding Nuclear Energy which separates the Implementing Agency and the Supervisory Agency in the use of nuclear energy

1998

Change in the name of National Atomic Energy Agency to become the National Nuclear Energy Agency (Pres.Dec. No.197 Year 1998)

2000

Inauguration of the increase of power of the Triga 2MW Reactor in the Bandung Center for Research of Nuclear Energy by the Vice President of RI

2001

Increase in the status of the Nuclear Technique expert Education (PATN) to become a School of Higher Learning in Nuclear Technology

2003

Submission of the results of “Comprehensive Assessment of Different Energy Sources for Electricity Generation in Indonesia” to the RI President; Achievement of 10% of the national number of superior plant varieties; Operation of the 350 keV Electron Beam Machine in PPTN Yogyakarta; Operation of the Center for Training and Dissemination of Animal Breeding Technology – Integrated Agriculture in South Kalimantan

2005

Realization of a digital library in the field of nuclear

2006

Achievement in the spread of 1 million hectares of superior rice paddy varieties of BATAN in all of Indonesia.

2008

50 years of BATAN Achievement.

2012

Reaching of 20 superior paddy varieties, 6 superior soybean varieties, 1 variety of mungbean, and 1 cotton variety after 54 years. Giving awards which is the G.A. Siwabessy Award to prominent people of merit in the development of nuclear technology in Indonesia. The G.A. Siwabessy Award was given to Ir. Sutaryo Supadi, M.Sc for the category of Nuclear Lifetime Achievement.

2013

The commemoration of the 55th anniversary of BATAN to Remain Creative and the change in the BATAN logo which possesses the meaning of BATAN as an institution which conducts research, development and utilization of science regarding nuclear which is honest, open, discipline, creative, innovative, prioritizing safety and security for the welfare of the nation.

2014

Indonesia has achieved the highest award in the field of nuclear (Outstanding Achievement Award) in the world, for the role as well as the support in food resilience through radiation by developing superior seed varieties. The award was given directly by the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano to the Indonesia Ambassador Rachmat Budiman witnessed by the Head of BATAN Prof. Dr. Djarot Sulistio Wisnubroto.
